India has long been the originator and curator of various sports, like Kho-Kho, Martial Arts, Chess, Kabaddi among others. But despite this fact, there didn’t exist any commercially advantageous domestic league in India until the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the year 2008.

The Indian Premier League was the brainchild of Lalit Modi, and it was inspired from LaLiga Football League. IPL is considered a path-breaking idea for Indian cricket as well as other sports in the country.
The tournament sees top quality players of various nationalities coming together and participating in this mixed-teams tournament. It hikes up the excitement of the viewers as their favorite players, from different countries, now play on the same, which isn’t possible for the ICC tournaments. This promotes bonding and celebrates the sport that we all love in harmony.

India has a massive viewership of cricket, therefore generating a large amount of revenue from broadcasting and media. The main sources of revenue for IPL are as follows:-
1. Gate Money
2. Broadcasting & Media Rights
3. Merchandising
4. Sponsors
5. Advertising
What makes the IPL a sustainable tournament is the fact that a massive chunk from the total revenue generated by the tournament is distributed among the various franchise, and the rest goes to BCCI, who is the organizer of the tournament. This keeps everyone who is associated with the games enthusiastic and motivated.
IPL is not only credited as a highly economic league, but also a treasure full of gems. It gives a platform to the young Indian talent to participate and prove themselves at an international level. Hence, it acts as a scout for the senior Indian national cricket team. Even Boom Boom Bumrah is one of the IPL givings.

Internationally, Australia’s Big Bash League, Caribbeans’ Caribbean Premier League, Pakistan’s Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh’s Bangladesh Premier League were all inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL). This remarks a great achievement on the global front.
Nationally, after the inception of the Indian Premier League, sports league for various sports were brought into action based on this model. PKL, ISL, PBL are among those leagues. And these leagues were very beneficial in promoting the respective sport in the country. This initiative, as a whole, has contributed hugely in developing and promoting professionalism of sports in India.

Inspecting everything, it would be safe to say IPL has been a groundbreaking invention in the sports industry, nationally and globally. And while serving so generously for the cricketing fraternity, it has been entertaining the masses in India and across borders for 13 years!
